4 Common Types of Scrap Steel

4 Common Types of Scrap Steel

Steel has become one of the most important materials on the planet. It is used in a wide variety of modern industries, and up to 40 percent of steel production worldwide uses recycled steel. At M&M Recycling, we proudly pay top prices for quality scrap metal recycling in Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding metro area communities. While there are more than three thousand grades of steel, almost all scrap metal steel falls under one of four categories. Are you interested in trading scrap metal for cash payments? Do you want to know more about the different varieties of scrap metal steel? Here is a list of the most common types.

Alloy Steel
Alloy steel can be made from a wide range of materials. The most common include copper, nickel, iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium and molybdenum. Alloy steels are created to suit different purposes and are used most often for pipelines, transformers, spacecraft, power generators, airplanes, auto parts and similar materials.

Carbon Steel
When carbon is used in steel production, it can result in a much stronger and durable metal. In our modern world, strength is often an important requirement, especially in the construction and transportation industry. Therefore, carbon steel makes up nearly 90 percent of the world’s demand for steel production, though the amount of carbon used can vary. High carbon steel, which includes up to 1.5 percent carbon, is the strongest and most resistant to wear. Therefore, it is often used for railways, cutting tools, wires, chisels and other items that deal with constant friction. Medium carbon contains around .60 percent carbon and is commonly used for construction and welding. Likewise, low carbon steel, which has around .30 percent carbon, is much easier to shape and form.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is also a very popular form of steel and is most often used when corrosion and aesthetics is an important factor. Stainless steel is highly reflective, resistant to weathering and can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it a popular choice for many different applications. Stainless steel is a top choice for commercial kitchens, residential appliances and medical equipment.

Tool Steel
Tool steel is made from a unique blend of chromium, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum. This incredible combination creates an alloy metal that is perfect for tools, thanks to its strength and hardness. Tools which are made from this kind of steel will resist warping and abrasion. These properties also make tool steel ideal for cutting, stamping and mold making.
